Why smiling can make you feel happier

Did you know that a study conducted in 2019 by psychologists at the University of Tennessee found that smiling can really make you feel happier? Other studies have even found that smiling can reduce the body’s response to stress, lower the heart rate, blood pressure, and even lead to increased longevity.

How does this happen?

When we smile, it tells our brain that we are feeling happy, which triggers our brain to release ‘feel good hormones’ dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. It’s like a cycle. When you smile, it makes you feel good, and when you feel good, you smile. Smiling is a great habit to get into, and a great way to look after your mental well-being. Source: Beyond Blue.

So why don’t we do it more often?

A recent survey by Orthodontics Australia found that 55% of Australians feel self conscious about their teeth. Let’s face it, to smile properly we need to show our teeth. So definitely having a great smile can help us to feel happier.

Unfortunately there are many barriers to people seeking dental treatment to achieve a smile they live. These include:

  1. Money
  2. Fear or phobias
  3. Time constraints
  4. Difficulty accessing dental treatment e.g. due to location

At our Claremont dental clinic Dental Quarters, we see a large variety of patients with an assortment of dental needs. Part of what we enjoy the most about our jobs is working with people to overcome these common barriers so that they can achieve a smile they love. The most rewarding part of our jobs is seeing how a beautiful smile can impact a persons’ confidence.
