What is it?
Simply put, digital smile design is a process which enables a patient to visualise how their teeth will look if they have a smile makeover. This is achieved by creating a mock-up design of the treatment digitally. This allows the patient to have input in the design and also enables the dentist to make sure the smile makeover is harmonious with the patient’s facial features. The custom smile design can, therefore, be adjusted so that the patient has control over how their smile will look. It removes any concerns they might have about how the end result will look because they have already trialled it for themselves. You can see first hand how your smile makeover will look before anything is carried out on your teeth.
How does it work?
The process begins by taking photos and videos of your smile. These are used to assess your smile, and also help us to take notes on what you want to change about your smile. We can also analyse the relationship between your teeth, lips, and other facial features. These records enable us to have an open discussion about your needs and wants regarding to your smile makeover.
Next, we will also scan your teeth with our high-tech digital scanner. This totally eliminates the need for you to have messy, gluggy impressions. These scans are just another important record we use to design your tailor-made smile.
We then make a 3D model called a ‘Diagnostic Wax Up’ which is basically a mock-up of your ideal smile that we designed with you. We use this to create a template which we fill with temporary resin. We put this into your mouth, covering your teeth in the same way that your smile makeover design would. This enables you to see for yourself how your smile makeover will look in real-time. We then take more photos and videos to document this, in case you want to make any more changes. This is only temporary and is easily removed after the photos and videos have been taken.
Once you are completely happy with your smile design makeover, we can then fabricate the design for you with the appropriate ceramic materials. These materials are made to mimic natural teeth and look very natural. The materials are tried onto your teeth, and if they meet your satisfaction, the proper bonding procedure is performed to attach them to your teeth.
