replacing amalgam fillings Claremont dental Perth cosmetic dentistry

Should you replace your amalgam fillings?

Amalgam fillings were very common previously as there were limited other options. The material was relatively easy to place, and cost efficient. But are they bad for you? And should you have yours changed?

If you’re thinking of changing your amalgam fillings, we strongly recommend you first have them assessed by a qualified dental practitioner. They can let you know if the fillings are in good condition. Things to look out for are whether the filling is intact, or has broken/missing parts, or whether there is any leakage.

If the filling is still in good condition, there are a few reasons other for replacing amalgam fillings, including:

  1. The appearance of the filling is unsightly and you would rather have a white filling
  2. There are cracks around the filling. Cracks around amalgam fillings are very common due to the way the tooth is shaped to keep the filling in. Part of the tooth cracking off over time is a very common side effect in teeth with amalgam fillings. You may need to have a stronger type of restoration such as a porcelain onlay or crown if your teeth has multiple cracks on it.
  3. The filling is already broken, or is very large and at risk of breaking/falling out
  4. The tooth has symptoms such as sensitivity, pain with pressure or biting on it.

As always, it’s important to have your teeth assessed by a qualified, experienced health professional. It may also be helpful to get a second opinion if this puts your mind at ease.
