Philips’ Sonicare Electric Toothbrush Review

Having been a long-time Oral B electric toothbrush user, I was very curious to try out the Philips’ Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 electric toothbrush. Utilising sonic technology, this toothbrush promises to:

-Remove up to 10x more plaque than a manual toothbrush

-Help you have up to 7x healthier gums than a manual toothbrush

-Help you have up to 100% less stains in just 3 days (using White+ Mode, Premium White Brush and leading whitening toothpaste). *White+ Mode only available with Diamond Clean toothbrush. Source: Philips website.

DETAILS:

The ProtectiveClean 4300 is one of the more basic models that Philips currently has on offer.

Features include:

-Pressure sensor (vibrates if you push too hard)

-1 cleaning mode

-2 intensities (high or low)

-Sonic technology pulses water between teeth, brush strokes break up plaque

-BrushSync replacement reminder (tells you when you need to replace the brush head automatically)

-Timer

COST:

We were lucky to be gifted one by Philips at the Australian Dental Congress.

Philips’ Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 electric toothbrush retails for $109 on the Philips’ website.

The top of the range electric brush in the Sonicare range, the DiamondClean retails at a hefty $439 for white, and $469 for black. See them both here. They look pretty amazing but certainly extremely expensive! Even Oral-B’s competitor brush the Oral-B Genius 9000 is less than half the price of the Sonicare.

EASE OF USE:

Very easy to use. The charging station is relatively small and simple to use.

Battery life excellent, lasts over 2 weeks. Plus side is that towards end of charge, brush head doesn’t go slower.

VERDICT:

Going from a manual brush to this one, I could definitely feel the difference. My teeth definitely felt cleaner and my gums healthier. Importantly, it didn’t cause my teeth to be too sensitive, or the brush too abrasive.

Interestingly, recent studies have shown that oscillating, rotating electric toothbrushes (e.g. Oral-B electric brushes) have been more effective than sonic brushes at removing plaque. But definitely this sonic brush is a step up from just brushing with a manual toothbrush.
