Our top tips on correct mask wearing

Now we are back in Lockdown 2.0, one of the main changes from the first lockdown was that mask wearing is not compulsory.

Part of our jobs means that we are in masks all the time when we are treating patients. There certainly are do’s and don’ts when it comes to mask wearing to make sure you (and others) are being properly protected.

Here are our top tips on what to do:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before putting your mask on.
  2. Adjust the nose are so that the top of your mask is fitting securely around your nose (there should not be large gaps). If you wear glasses, the mask should sit just underneath it and not impede it in any way.
  3. The mask should cover your chin, nose and mouth fully. None of these areas should be exposed.
  4. Once your mask is on, avoid touching any part of it, especially when you are outside.
  5. Once you are outside, avoid taking the mask on and off. E.g. Do not pull it down over your chin or put it on your head. If you are in contact with contaminants, they may then get onto your hands or face if you do this.
  6. If you do have to touch the outer surface of your mouth for any reason, then ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
  7. When removing your mask, it is important to absolutely avoid touching the outside parts of the mask. To remove it, remove the earloops. If you are wearing a disposable mask, throw it away and wash your hands thoroughly. If you are wearing a cloth or resuable mask, place it in the washing machine and wash your hands.
