Our recommendations for healthy gums

Tooth and gum health go hand in hand for a healthy mouth. The gums are the foundations for the teeth, so they are both equally as important. Gums support your teeth in your jaw bone and ensure they stay there for as long as possible.

Unfortunately some people are susceptible to gum disease, which is a condition where the gums become inflamed, and this chronic inflammation causes the gums and bone to deteriorate. We all have bacteria in our mouths, but unfortunately, some people are more susceptible to certain bacteria that exacerbate the inflammation of their gums. Without proper intervention, the teeth can become wobbly and eventually fall out.

These are our recommendations for healthy gums:

  1. See your dental professional for 6 monthly cleaning. This will help to reduce bacteria deposits around the gums and teeth to improve the health of your gums.
  2. If you are susceptible to gum disease, see a gum specialist (periodontist) early, to improve the probability that you can keep your teeth for as long as possible.
  3. Daily interdental cleaning. Cleaning in between your teeth with your preferred method (dental floss, floss sticks, interdental brushes or water flossers) once before bed will help reduce bacteria and food particles that could cause gum inflammation.
  4. Brushing twice (or three times) a day if possible. Again, the more bacteria you can remove in your mouth, the less inflammation you will have around your teeth and gums. Try to point the bristles of your brush toward the gumlines of your teeth when you brush.
