Oral-B Genius 9000 Electric Toothbrush Review

The latest toothbrush from Oral-B is the Genius 9000. It retails for around $300. I was pretty excited to purchase this electric toothbrush, as I’ve had my old Oral-B Professional for the last 10 years. It was definitely in need of replacing!

The Oral-B Genius 9000 Electric Toothbrush is the new ‘top of the range’ electric toothbrush from Oral-B.  The biggest selling point for me is the travel case which includes a charger. Personally I never bothered to bring my electric toothbrush when travelling because it took up space and was irritating to charge on the go. This new travel case totally changes this! The brush fits into it snugly into the slim case, and the charging port on the end of the case can fit any USB charger. No more excuses for getting tartar build up on my teeth from brushing with a manual brush whilst on holiday!!!!

FEATURES:

– travel case which includes charger (a great idea!)

– 6 different cleaning functions: Daily clean, Pro clean, Sensitive, 3D White, Gum care, Tongue clean

– Pressure sensor which lets you know if you are brushing too hard

– Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone holder

-Position detection which lets you know if you are brushing all surfaces of your teeth properly

EASE OF USE:

I’m pretty used to using Oral-B electric toothbrushes, so it was easy to get the hang of. Personally, I don’t really bother using all the different functions. I just leave my brush on the ‘Sensitive’ function. The brush defaults back to the last function you used. So let’s say you used the ‘Tongue clean’ function after using the ‘Daily clean’ function, you’d have to change it back the next time you use it. That’s a bit annoying so I just don’t bother with it.

The SmartRing at the neck of the brush I thought was pretty useful. The SmartRing usually is blue when in use (incidentally, you can select your own colour preference in the app), but when you exert too much pressure when brushing, it goes red to let you know. This is a great function for those that may be heavy-handed with brushing. It could really help prevent damage to your teeth from over-brushing.

The timer feature is the same as previous Oral-B brushes, it will vibrate at different intervals, ending with a double vibrate at the 2 minute mark.

I connected my phone up to the App, and the data you get is pretty useful if you are truly interested in improving your oral hygiene. It records how many times you’ve brushed, for how long, and you can also record flossing and tongue brushing. The position detection analyses how well you have brushed all surfaces of all your teeth, so you know if you are missing certain areas. I was quite impressed given this was my first time using an electric toothbrush with bluetooth connectivity!

Although for me, I am not sure that I would have the time to spend analysing it. I am not usually accustomed to bringing my phone into the bathroom whilst brushing my teeth to check if I am brushing correctly. I think it could really be very useful for teenagers who aren’t very motivated to clean their teeth!

VERDICT:

Things I love:

– new travel case with charger

– new charging station is more hygienic to keep clean

– comes with 3 new toothbrush heads

– pressure sensor

– app is great if you really want to make sure you are cleaning your teeth optimally

Things I don’t love:

– Toothbrush defaults back to the last function you used, so you have to change it back all the time if you use different functions

– It is an expensive brush. But given my last Oral-B electric toothbrush lasted about 10 years, if I get the same lifetime out of this one, I’d be pretty happy

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this brush. Some of the more ‘techy’ elements are probably lost on me, but it is still a great electric toothbrush! If cost is an issue or you think the extra features would be lost on you, I’d recommend any of the other ‘lower end’ toothbrushes by Oral-B as a great compromise.
