New year dental checklist for a healthier smile

The start of a new year is a great time to make some resolutions or goals or form better habits. Your teeth are no exception.

I have compiled a dental checklist for some changes you can make that can help you achieve a healthier smile this year! After all, it’s these small changes that can help in preventing the onset of dental problems. And we all know that prevention is better than cure!

At our dental clinic in Claremont, our aim is to help and support our patients to achieve a better smile. We do this by taking the time to discuss their dental concerns as well as ways they can help to improve their own dental health.

Make the decision to improve your dental health this year with this dental checklist:

  1. Switch out your usual sugary drinks with plain cold water, or sparkling water if you must. Keep an eye out for ‘healthy’ drinks such as kombucha or excessive apple cider vinegar, as these drinks can still be loaded with sugar and also high in acid. If possible, it’s best to drink plain water and have tea/coffee without sugar. Drinking a lot of sparkling water can also damage your teeth as it is acidic.
  2. Switch out lollies for fresh fruit. When you feel the need for sugary snacks, try to eat some fresh fruit instead. Fresh fruit is still better than dried fruit, as dried fruit is high in sugar and also tends to have a sticky consistency. This means it gets stuck in our teeth more easily and can lead to tooth decay.
  3. Visit the dentist twice a year. If you need help sticking to this resolution, we can always help to pre-book your visits and also send you reminders so you don’t forget!
  4. Floss nightly. We know this is one a lot of people struggle with. Our challenge to you is to do it nightly for 6 weeks, so that it forms as a nightly habit.
  5. Get an electric toothbrush! Our top recommendation is the Oral B Genius-9000. It has bluetooth connectivity so that you get feedback on how well you are brushing, as well as a pressure sensor so you don’t damage your teeth by brushing too hard. Electric toothbrushes are great if you want to get your teeth as clean as possible, reduce stains and tartar buildup.

So there you have it! I hope these tips help you to achieve a healthier smile for this year!
