Tooth erosion: the drinks that cause it
The “raw” truth behind fruit juice
It is a known fact that most acidic (lower pH) beverages can cause tooth erosion (dissolve the outer tooth enamel of your teeth). When these drinks are consumed through a straw though, there is little or no dissolution.
Suprisingly, Coke causes less dissolution and is less damaging to the enamel surface than citrus fruit juices such as orange or lemon juice. If any drink with a low enough pH or high sugar content is left around the teeth, these beverages can cause tooth erosion and and encourage plaque formation.
So, should we be drinking Coke instead freshly squeezed juice? The answer is no! Just be aware that replacing soft drinks with “fresh” citrus juices with a healthy mindset may in fact be more damaging to your teeth than you think!
