How to whiten teeth

White teeth have always been a popular and common request among patients. So what can you do if your teeth are not as white as you would like and you want them to be whiter?

Here’s a list that of common ways to whiten teeth collated by our Claremont dentists:

  1. Have your teeth cleaned professionally. Professional teeth cleaning helps to remove bacteria deposits and stains. This can help your teeth to look whiter. It’s also a great way to keep your gums healthy too.
  2. Whiten your teeth. There’s so many ways to try this, varying from whitening toothpastes, whitening strips/pens, home whitening kit and in chair whitening at your dentist. It’s best to discuss what’s going to work best with your dentist. It’s also helpful to have your teeth checked first in case there is a reason why your teeth are dark. This could be due to taking antibiotics as a child, tooth decay, gum disease or even fluorosis (a defect in enamel caused by too much fluoride).
  3. Try out an electric toothbrush. Keeping your teeth cleaner will result in less staining from food and drink such as tea, coffee and red wine. This will help to keep your teeth looking whiter.
  4. Get your teeth straightened. If your teeth are naturally crooked, they tend to look less white. We are often amazed that our patients who have completed Invisalign treatment and have straighter teeth often look like their teeth have been whitened compared to when their teeth were crooked.
