Healthy foods for strong teeth

You may have heard the saying, ‘You are what you eat’. This definitely rings true when it comes to your teeth. Your diet can greatly impact on the health of your mouth. In fact, many dental diseases such as tooth decay are contributed to by dietary factors such as acidic foods/drinks and foods high in processed sugar.

Here are our top recommendations for foods that will help you to have healthy, strong teeth:

  1. Dairy products high in calcium. Cheese, milk and yogurt are healthy foods for strong teeth as they contain calcium and also casein, which helps to promote healthy tooth enamel. When choosing yogurts in particular, make sure to check the sugar content, as many yogurts can be very high in sugar. CPP-ACP (Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate) is derived from cow’s milk, and has been found to help remineralise tooth enamel and prevent dental caries. You can find this ingredient in GC Tooth Mousse, GC Tooth Mousse Plus and GC Recaldent chewing gum. We stock these products for purchase at our Claremont dental clinic.
  2. Water! By far the best drink for your body and teeth, when you are thirsty, we recommend you drink water rather than juice, energy drinks, sparkling water or fizzy drinks.
  3. Fresh fruit and vegetables. It goes without saying that fresh fruit and raw vegetables (where appropriate) will help to keep your teeth (and body!) healthy. Just be mindful of your fruit intake when it comes to citrus fruits. Citrus contains citric acid, which when taken in moderation is not harmful for your teeth. However, if you consume a large amount of citrus fruit in juice or fresh form on a daily basis, you may be exacerbating dental erosion and tooth decay.
