FAQ interview with our expert Oral Health Therapist Shannon

Our expert Oral Health Therapist Shannon has been part of our Claremont dental team since 2023. We have found that having her as part of the team has enabled us to provide an even higher level of care and customised approach to helping our patients’ achieve their best oral health.

So you might be wondering what an Oral Health Therapist (OHT) does, and how they fit within the dental team at Dental Quarters Claremont.

We interviewed Shannon recently so she could answer some frequently asked questions (FAQ) that can help you to understand her role in our Claremont dental clinic.

What are your qualifications and where did you graduate from?

Bachelor of Science (Oral Health Therapy) from Curtin University.

Many people are confused about what an OHT is/does. Could you explain what your job is?

Oral Health Therapists have a dual qualification in dental therapy and dental hygiene. Treatments include, but are not limited to; examinations, scale & cleaning, restorative treatments (fillings & pulpotomies), fissure sealants, removal of ‘baby’ teeth, periodontal (gum) treatment, teeth whitening, and promoting healthy oral habits.

How is your job different to a dentist?

Our dentist, Dr Stephen Chan, and myself work together to ensure optimum oral health for our patients. He will manage more complex treatments (e.g. large fillings, root canals, crowns, adult extractions, surgeries etc) while I focus on the above treatments (listed in the previous answer) and preventive strategies to maintain your oral health and prevent oral diseases.

What do you love about your job?

I love the diversity of my job, every day is different so there is always something new to see and learn. I also enjoy meeting new patients and the relationships you have with them.

What is your role in the dental team?

I examine the patients and create a treatment plan with the dentist that is specific to each patient. My role is largely focused on prevention of diseases so will always encourage good oral hygiene habits and recommend the best tips suited to the patient.

Are there any specific areas you are passionate about?

I enjoy all aspects of my job but I love working with kids, it’s really satisfying seeing how proud they are after their first visit or procedure.

What would you say to someone who is contemplating a career as an OHT?

It is a great job, there are always new things to learn and there are so many different pathways once you finish your studies. It is a difficult degree and requires a big commitment but worth every minute.
