Commonly asked questions about Invisalign clear aligners

Do you want to have straighter teeth, but without unsightly braces? Invisalign clear aligners offer another method of straightening your teeth without metal braces, which can be uncomfortable.

Our Invisalign certified providers at our Claremont dental clinic have been straightening smiles for many years now. We have collated a list of commonly asked questions about Invisalign which you might find helpful.

  1. Can I eat with Invisalign? Yes! You can eat any foods that you wish, however, you must remove your aligners so they do not become damaged. If you have conventional braces, you must often avoid chewing gum, sticky lollies and hard foods in case it damages the brackets.
  2. Can I drink with Invisalign? Yes! Drinking water with your Invisalign clear aligners in is perfectly fine. We would recommend avoiding hot water (may warp the plastic), and also any other drinks as they could cause decay of your teeth.
  3. How long will it take to straighten my teeth? This depends on the issues that you need fixing. We can start the process by scanning your mouth and taking photographs, after which we will have a more accurate idea of how long your treatment will take.
  4. What if I lose an aligner? If you lose an aligner, we recommend to go back to the previous one. We always tell our patients NOT to throw out any old aligners in case of this problem. Contact us straight away and we can order you a new one.
  5. What if my teeth are not as straight as I would like at the end of my treatment? If you’re not 100% happy with the end result, we can arrange for additional aligners to fix the problem. Just speak with our Claremont dentists. You’ll find we are all perfectionists, so we would want to make sure you get the best result from your treatment.
  6. Do I need to get my fillings done before I have Invisalign? Yes! It’s definitely recommended to get any outstanding dental treatment you need completed before you straighten your teeth. The only exception to this would be any cosmetic work to your front teeth that you may need. It’s best to discuss the best process of getting things done with your dentist.
  7. Do I need to get my wisdom teeth out before I have Invisalign? This will vary on a case by case basis. Your dentist will discuss this with you depending on your individual situation.
  8. Will anyone know I am straightening my teeth? It’s quite unlikely the average person will know you are straightening your teeth unless you say so, as the aligners are all clear and quite hard to detect.
