Boie Toothbrush: dentist review

Non-nylon toothbrushes are a new upcoming trend in dental care. We tried out the Boie Toothbrush, which is the first toothbrush to be launched through Kickstarter. According to them, it’s the ‘toothbrush of the future’.

DETAILS:

Boie Toothbrush.

This toothbrush is made from medical grade elastomer rather than traditional nylon. These bristles are supposed to be less abrasive than traditional nylon. The toothbrush heads are also replaceable, so you don’t have to purchase a whole new toothbrush every time.

The medical grade elastomer has silver included which provides some antimicrobial properties. It is available in black, pink, red and blue. We got black (of course!).

From their website:

-100% recyclable

-Antimicrobial

-Lasts twice as long as a nylon toothbrush

-environmentally friendly

COST:

USD$12 for one brush, USD$5 for replacement brush heads. We ordered direct from the Boie USA website. Shipping was a bit of a killer, at about AUD$15.

EASE OF USE:

Very easy to use. I definitely found it seemed a lot less abrasive. I am prone to brushing a bit too hard at times, which I tend to notice because my teeth get sensitive. I noticed no sensitivity whatsoever when I brushed with this brush.

The handle is ergonomically designed, and I found it comfortable to use. It may be more difficult for those with dexterity issues such as arthritis etc., as the handle is quite thin.

VERDICT:

I really love this brush, and would actually contemplate using this as my normal toothbrush, if it were more readily available in Australia. The postage cost is just too difficult to justify for use regularly. Hopefully this brush becomes more accessible in future.

If anything, I think it would be better if the removable part of the toothbrush head was slightly lower down the brush handle (i.e. didn’t go anywhere near your mouth), as bacteria and nasties can get trapped at the join.
