Charcoal toothbrushes: the secret to white teeth?

Let’s kick off our natural dental product reviews series by reviewing PearlBar’s Planet-loving charcoal-infused toothbrush. Do charcoal toothbrushes really make your teeth whiter?

I’ll be giving my usual electric toothbrush a rest for the next 3 months to try it out. Admittedly, it does feel a bit strange to be brushing my teeth with a black toothbrush, but hey, all in the name of science!

The packaging claims that charcoal is:

‘a natural antibacterial agent, which absorbs odour and balances the pH levels of your mouth’

‘absorbs chlorine and other harsh chemicals whilst acting as a natural teeth whitener’

Not sure about all these claims, but I will give it a go!

The thing that does appeal to me is that the brush and packaging will naturally break down after 4 months.

‘the current environmental issues surrounding the disposal of plastic toothbrushes has resulted in 30+ million plastic toothbrushes which will not break down in this lifetime’. – That’s a lot of toothbrushes!

After use for 3 months, instructions are to ‘place the brush in soil and let nature take its course’. That would make for an interesting garden installation. Fortunately, I live in an apartment, but I guess maybe a toothbrush graveyard on the balcony might take off….?

DETAILS:

PearlBar Bamboo and Charcoal Toothbrush, soft bristles

COST:

$7.16 from Nourished Life

About double the price of a traditional manual toothbrush. If you want a charcoal toothbrush for about half the cost of PearlBar’s one, Colgate actually make a charcoal version of their Slim Soft toothbrush. Doesn’t have the cool bamboo handle, so you can’t plant it in your garden! That one will have to go into the bin!

EASE OF USE:

The bamboo handle feels pretty comfy and well balanced. The bristles felt silky soft and gentle! Definitely no risk of accidentally jabbing them into your gums! This tooth brush would be well recommended for those of you with sensitive teeth.

TASTE: N/A. It didn’t taste like charcoal, in case you were wondering!

I was pretty impressed with the brush, my teeth felt pretty clean afterwards and the bristles were really soft. Whilst some of the purported benefits are questionable, we know that physical cleaning is still the best way to remove bacteria effectively, so it’s what you do with the brush that matters!

I’ve given 3 shiny teeth out of 5, because I feel that I can clean better with my smaller electric toothbrush head around the back surfaces of my teeth.

Keep checking in because I’ll be reviewing whether this toothbrush really has a ‘whitening effect’ on my teeth after my 3 months’ of use is up! So stay tuned!
