Top free toothbrushing apps for kids
Toothbrushing apps can really help to keep kids motivated about brushing, as well as helping to make sure they are brushing for the full 2 minutes! All of the apps I reviewed are free, and you’ll see which are my top picks for younger and older kids. I specifically wanted to look at whether the app helped kids to brush with the proper technique, keep them interested, and give the correct information on brushing habits.
1. Brusheez
Basically a toothbrushing timer, there are 2 customisable characters for kids to choose from, and an informative (if slightly creepy) song to time brushing for 2 minutes. Extra characters and ‘grown up’ check function costs money ($1.50).
2. The Wiggles Brushing App
You can set two toothbrushing times on this app, and it will send push notifications to your phone as reminders. You can add the details of more than one child, and they can each earn their own ‘rewards’. The 2 minute timer features a fun song by The Wiggles that features them singing, as well as other kids brushing. A pretty good app that would keep younger kids motivated and interested.

3. Colgate Brushing Adventure
A fun brushing timer with a catchy song. You can also earn rewards and play the ‘Plaque Attack Game’ if you register online. Would suit older kids. Has more of a ‘game format’, so would appeal to kids who are very competitive!
4. Brush Up – The toothbrush training game
Has a really cool function that uses your phone’s camera so kids see themselves in the ‘mirror’ whilst they are brushing. The song is catchy, and the great things about this is kids can copy brushing order and technique really carefully. It shows in great detail how to clean all the different surfaces of the teeth so kids are less likely to miss areas. The animation is really easy to follow and quite straightforward. This would be great for older kids who lack motivation, or aren’t brushing all the surfaces of their teeth properly. Would be great to use a phone mount to attach your phone to the bathroom mirror for kids.
At the end of the brushing, the app also checks the video of your child’s brushing to make sure they were copying the animation. They can then earn rewards for great brushing.

5. Brushy Time
A fun pirate-themed brushing timer app. A fairly basic 2 minute brushing timer. Pretty basic and not very exciting.
6. Macleans Brush Time
2 minute brushing timer with a somewhat comical ‘Superhero’ character, known as ‘Captain Macleans’. A catchy song with a video, plus dancing. Songs and scenery are customisable. You can unlock more characters by brushing frequently. Not all that appealing.
7. Chomper Chums
Jungle themed app with handy brush timer, with a basic animation so kids can follow the same brushing order. Not much useful tips about brushing all the surfaces of the teeth though. Brushing for 2 minutes earns points (or coins), which you can then use to buy food. Also gives some general tips on ‘healthy’ food choices. The only app that has a flossing timer too!
